June 2nd spent as tourists in the IOM.
A short distance from Port St Mary is Port Erin on the western side of the island. From here we were able to travel on the only fully working everyday steam railway on a trip to Douglas. It was a magical experience, a narrow gauge railway, winding its way through glorious countryside and stopping at numerous halts and small stations along the way.
In stark contrast to the bucolic splendour of the railway, in Douglas, we watched motorcyclists hurl themselves down Bray Hill at speeds around 200mph only to make a sharp right hand turn still doing 70-90mph. Earlier we had seen the Olympic Torch being paraded alongside the harbour.
Tomorrow holds the promise of a sail in the direction of Ardglass in Ireland. The weather suggests a strongish easterly wind but a choppy ride. We shall see! Ardglass is a temporary stop because we cannot time our arrival to get favourable tides to enter Strangford Lough. We hope to do this on Monday.
