Day 15 -The Crinan Canal

The route from beginning to end.
When the sea lock operation started at 0900am the first boat out was a Swedish 30 footer and we joined her to enter the first lock. It was a tight fit and during the following 20 or so locks we refined the method of how we could arrange ourselves. Our Swedish colleagues were on the last leg of their 8 year trip around the world and were heading via the Caledonian Canal, the North Sea and Denmark, home to a small town south of Malmo. Fortunately we had help with the locks throughout our passage and this made all the difference. Nevertheless I think John's arms may be a little longer than when we started.

The weather has been kind to us, dry, warm,  bright but rather cloudy. I has enable us to appreciate the glorious scenery along the banks of the canal. Many of the locks leak like a sieve and let in almost as much water as the sluices let out. On all occasions the sluices won.
The "Niagra Falls" lock.

The Crinan Hotel harks back to an earlier age but provides an excellent seafood restaurant. The Crinan Scallops and John's Arbroath smokey have left us pleasantly satisfied.

They obviously have their own version of rugby up here, played in a marsh!
Journeys end, Crinan Basin.
