Stromness marina basking in the evening sun |
Map of Orkney Islands |
A delicate exercise in tide planning gave us following tides through Hoy Sound after departing Stromness and via Westray Firth as we pass north of the island of Rousay. Tides in Westray Firth and south toward Kirkwall are fierce and for much of the time were running a 6 knots of more. Leaving at 6am, a very brief flurry of wind dissipated and by mid morning we had one of the warmest day we have experienced. Despite the lack of wind and the refreshing warm feel of the sun, we passed through strong eddies and overfalls caused by confused tidal water. One understands why these waters can be so treacherous in more challenging conditions. Arriving in Kirkwall at 1200 we enjoyed the rat of day soaking up the sunshine lazing about on Soleis.
