Day 29 Kinlochbervie to Stromness in the Orkneys

Leaving Kinlochbervie at 4am

A journey of 75 nautical miles it was necessary to arrive in Hoy Sound of Stromness as the eastbound tides started. This entailed leaving at 4am for a 12 hour journey. The early start offered clear skys and a promising day. Winds over previous days had left a 2-3 meter swell for most of the 12 hours and without wind to stabilise the boat a rather unpleasant motion.

Leaving Cape Wrath behind

On several occasions we were accompanied by fulmars and skuas, but otherwise saw no fellow sailors or traffic before reaching Hoy Sound. The sun rose at 0445 and we passed Cape Wrath at 6am bathed in sunlight. A welcome following tide has assisted our journey north.

There is not a lot to be said about 12 hours motoring, it always seem interminable but at east the weather was agreeable. Our good progress meant that we were going to arrive in Hoy Sound before the change of the tides so a couple of hours before our due arrival we slowed down to meet our tidal gate. Despite this the tides forecast by the tidal planner were significantly stronger so we plodded up the sound against a 3 knot tide into Stromness at about 4pm.
