Day 9 - Holyhead to Port St Mary on the Isle of Man


David had reminded us that the Manx TT was taking place across our visit and so we changed our original plan to stay in Peel Marina as a telephone call suggested it would be extremely congested and it would be difficult to get a berth. Again a pleasant day of motoring and we arrived in Port St Mary in the early afternoon to moor on the last visitors buoy in the harbour.  During the day we had to cross the Traffic Separation System that allow tankers and cargo vessel in and out of Liverpool and Manchester. There are tow directional lanes separated by a wide stretch of sea.  As luck would have it our track conflicted with the only two ships in the system at the time. We adjusted course on each occasion, the first time we passed 0.8nm in font of a large container ship and the second time 0.5nm behind an enormous tanker.

The ships appear as small triangles on the chart plotter and we can interrogate the plot to get the information below. We are the boat in the centre of the circle with our change in track shown below.
